Despite my best efforts, it was bound to happen. This reflects on this customer far more than it does on me.

They don’t tell you which customer gave you the 1-star rating, but I know exactly who it was and the situation that caused it.

On Sunday I picked up an order from Freddy’s Frozen Custard and dropped it off a couple of miles away. It was a “Leave it at my door” order, so I had no contact with the customer. I sent one of my memes when I had picked up the order and they didn’t respond.

After I dropped off the order and had already accepted another delivery I got this response:

I get that they weren’t happy about missing items, but a few things come into play here:

  1. Many restaurants seal their bags, and I can’t look inside to see what is in there.
  2. Even for restaurants that don’t seal their bags, I am not going to open them up and go through peoples food. I sure wouldn’t want someone to do that to my order.
  3. I do my best to verify with the restaurant workers that everything is included, but in the end my only job is the transportation of the items I am given to the customer. I am not a quality-control analyst for the restaurants.

Now obviously it is in my best interest to make sure customers receive everything they order, hot (or cold, depending on the food), and in a timely manner. I understand this customer was unhappy that this didn’t happen, and maybe I could have checked a little more closely, but there was nothing I could do at this point other than explain the situation and refer them back to DoorDash since I was on another delivery.

From the customer’s viewpoint

I can see rating me down for “Order Handling”, but I did follow their Delivery Instructions and I am always Friendly as I think the screen-shot of my texts show. This was just them being whiny and petty and not engaging any critical thinking skills to consider the explanation I gave them.

I’m not going to dwell on it, you can’t win 100% of the time, and as Marcus Aurelius reminds us to ponder: “Today I shall be meeting with interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, ill-will, and selfishness – all of them due to the offenders’ ignorance of what is good or evil.” . I’ll continue to do my best and move on to the next shift and the next order.
